MLB this weekend: Derek Jeter’s quest for hit number 3,000

by Matt Smith

CovHlWEThere is much to play for as we head into the All-Star break, but one man has more to gain than most.

Derek Jeter’s quest for 3,000 career hits might have already been over had Friday night’s game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays not been postponed due to rain.

Jeter only needs two more hits to hit the big 3,000 and the Yankees’ two remaining games before the All-Star break are being played at 1.05 p.m. local time.

That makes for an 18.05 BST start and both games will be broadcast live in the UK: Saturday’s game on ESPN America and Sunday’s on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra.

Those Rays-Yankees encounters are just two of an exciting group of MLB games that are scheduled to start before midnight UK time this weekend.

Saturday 9 July

18.05. Tampa Bay at NY Yankees (Price – Burnett) *ESPN America
21.10. Minnesota at Chicago White Sox (Duensing – Buehrle)
21.10. San Diego at LA Dodgers (Harang – De La Rosa)
21.10. Atlanta at Philadelphia (Hanson – Lee) *ESPN America

The hype surrounding the Jeter storyline shouldn’t overshadow the fact that this is an important series for the two AL East teams.  David Price and A.J. Burnett were due to take the mound on Friday and will pitch on an extra day of rest.

It’s no surprise that ESPN America has chosen to broadcast the Braves-Phillies game.  They are the top two teams in the NL East and a pitching match-up between Tommy Hanson and Cliff Lee is a genuine headline act.  However, fans with an MLB.com subscription – not to mention those with an allegiance to either team – may choose to look in on the Padres-Dodgers game as L.A. will have the exciting young right-hander Rubby De La Rosa on the mound.

Sunday 10 July

18.05. Toronto at Cleveland (Cecil – Carrasco)
18.05. Tampa Bay at NY Yankees (Shields – Sabathia) *BBC 5 Live Sports Extra
18.10. Houston at Florida (Rodriguez – Volstad)
18.35. Baltimore at Boston (Atkins – Weiland)
18.35. Colorado at Washington (Chacin – Zimmermann)
18.35. Atlanta at Philadelphia (Lowe – Hamels)
18.35. Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh (Ortiz – Maholm)
19.10. Minnesota at Chicago White Sox (Swarzak – Peavy)
19.10. Detroit at Kansas City (Verlander – Francis)
19.10. Cincinnati at Milwaukee (Willis – Wolf)
19.15. Arizona at St. Louis (Duke – Garcia)
20.05. Oakland at Texas (Cahill – Harrison)
20.35. Seattle at LA Angels (Hernandez – Haren)
21.10. San Diego at LA Dodgers (Stauffer – Lilly)

Even if Jeter has already knocked his historic hit, Nat Coombs and Josh Chetwynd won’t need to work hard in selling the BBC radio game.  James Shields and CC Sabathia have both had an excellent first half to the season and they will be keen to head into the All-Star break with a dominating performance.  The BBC show goes on air at 18.00.

Elsewhere, Dontrelle Willis makes another MLB comeback with the Reds, Justin Verlander (arguably the best pitcher in the American League so far this season) pitches for the Tigers and there’s an excellent game in prospect at Angel Stadium with Felix Hernandez and Dan Haren scheduled to be the starting pitchers.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com.  The games being shown on ESPN America are highlighted above.  You can listen to the 5 Live Sports Extra game via Digital Radio, Digital TV or online on the BBC website (UK residents only). The full schedule for this weekend’s games can be found on MLB.com.
