After the whirlwind of the last few days, we have a couple of evenings to reflect on all that has happened before live MLB returns during the British evening on Wednesday.

There are five early starts on Wednesday, followed by two from the American League on Thursday and a Cubs home game on Friday.

A Roy Halladay start will always catch the eye, but there are several other interesting storylines from the list of probable pitchers. 

Edwin Jackson’s first start for St. Louis went very well on Friday and he’ll look to make it two from two in a big series against the Brewers. Jason Marquis is scheduled to make his debut for the D-Backs following his trade from Washington, while Chein-Ming Wang continues his comeback with Marquis’ former team. Both of those games will be shown on ESPN America. 

Erik Bedard was originaly pencilled in for the Mariners game but following his last-minute trade to the Red Sox on Sunday, Seattle will instead turn to Charlie Furbush, acquired in the deal that sent Doug Fister to the Detroit Tigers.

We’ve got two early games from the American League on Thursday.  The Rangers were one of the active teams leading up to the deadline, acquiring two very useful bullpen arms in Koji Uehara and Mike Adams. Alexi Ogando’s aim will be to pitch so well on Thursday that neither are needed.

Friday 5 August

19.20. Cincinnati at Chicago Cubs (Leake – Dempster) *ESPN America

Friday’s game from Wrigley involves two teams that didn’t do much at the trade deadline, to the disappointment of their fans.  The Reds couldn’t find a deal or two to improve their club and that may prove to be one of the defining moments of their season if they end up being unable to retain their NL Central crown. 

As for the Cubs, they were only able to move Kosuke Fukudome from their group of veteran players, leaving them still without a clear plan on how the club will get back into contention in the near future.  Ryan Dempster will try to pitch those problems away for one day with a strong outing on the mound.
