Baseball World Cup 2009: Opening day

by Matt Smith

baseball-worldcup2009Today is the opening day of the 2009 Baseball World Cup, staged this year in various locations across Europe.  Although Great Britain do not play until tomorrow, the small matter of a game against Japan, there are four games taking place over four different venues today: Prague, Barcelona, Sundbyberg and Regensburg.

The latter venue will host Germany’s opening game against China.  The ballpark in Regensburg has undergone an impressive renovation for the World Cup and the games there will be a great way to sell the sport, particularly the home nation’s contest against the USA on Friday.  Gemany-China is being broadcast on Eurosport2, and on the Eurosport website, with first pitch scheduled for approximately 18.00 BST.
