Improvements made to Project Cobb website

by Joe Gray

Cobb (128x128)Back in September, Matt announced his upcoming plans for BaseballGB in an interview with baseball-braniac.com. This included news of a design overhaul to make the site even more useful and enjoyable for you, the reader. After a lot of work to get the new-look site ready, I believe that the big upload is very close.

I hope, then, that Matt doesn’t see me announcing news of some improvements to the Project Cobb site as trying to steal his hyperspace thunder. Well, here goes anyway (I guess if it’s really an issue Matt can always delete this post and say “sorry Joe, it accidentally got lost during the transitional period”).

The truth is, compared with Matt’s imminent BaseballGB overhaul (for which, incidentally, I’ve had the good fortune to see some very impressive previews), my changes are mere tweaks.

The home page now just contains a description of Project Cobb’s background and aims, as well as details of how to get involved, as the additional pages that were added a few months ago are a more appropriate place for the additional content that appeared on the home page.

The research zone, historical materials, and photography areas have all had an introductory box added to provide an overview of their purpose and contents, with the contents expanding in all three cases as part of the design tweaks. Among the additions are the following.

  • bbpcIn the photography area is the announcement of Project Cobb’s plans to create a national baseball photography competition, starting from the 2010 season. A sponsor is currently being sought to make prize money available and thus turn the idea into a reality.
  • In the historical materials section you can now download an issue of Baseball (in Britain) Monthly from July 1950, which was a 24-page publication containing a range on news stories on British baseball.
  • Also in the historical materials is a selection of cartoons from 1987 by Ken Pyne that offer British baseball humour, to add to the collection already held of Rex Phillips’ drawings.

Much more new information and materials will be added over the coming months, so I’d strongly recommend that you keep an eye on the site if you have an interest in chronicling or researching British baseball history.

Hi Joe. The tweaks certainly bring another dimension to the site. I particularly like the use of the Picasa web albums and the Photography Competition looks like being a great way to get other people involved.

A quick glance at the Historical Materials page shows there are plenty more things for me and countless other baseball fans to delve in to. Once I’ve got the new design up and running (which, fingers crossed, will be very soon) I’ll be able to dedicate some time to that and hopefully also to doing a spot of research myself over the offseason.

Great work.
