Down the stretch: Photo and writing awards

As teams with a chance of making the British baseball play-offs begin to make final preparations, so must those individuals whose grip is not on a seam or bat handle but rather a shutter or a pen. Just as the season’s sand grains are tumbling, so is time running out for entries to be submitted to the British Baseball Photography Competition and British Softball Photography Competition (in their fourth years) and the British Baseball Writing Awards (being run, initially at least, as a 1-year experiment to assess interest).

If you’re umming and arrhing about submitting something to one or both of the competitions, the organizers sincerely encourage you to enter. You have nothing to lose, and — who knows — you might just win.

Specific details for each of the competitions are provided below.

Vote now in the British Baseball Photography Competition

Voting has just opened for the 2012 British Baseball Photography Competition. To see the gallery of 10 entries shortlisted by the judging panel and to cast your vote, CLICK HERE.

One vote will be accepted per email address and the ballot will close at 11.59pm on 16 November.

Baseball finals offer ideal chance for late-season photography

The British Baseball Photography Competition (BBPC; run in conjunction with Project COBB Photography) is accepting entries till the end of September, but with photographic opportunities now running out, it’s an excellent time to be capitalising on the last remaining events in the calendar and also to go back through the albums you have from earlier in the season.

So choose your best 24 shots and submit them, via the specially built online entry form, to be in with a chance to scoop the £100 of photographic vouchers on offer as the first prize. The online entry form can be accessed by clicking HERE.

Once we get to October, a shortlist will be drawn up and published for a public vote, and the winner — who will receive £100 in photo vouchers — will be announced in November. For handy hints on how to please the judges, check out this article. Full competition rules can be found by clicking here.

Keep the entries coming for the BBPC

The British Baseball Photography Competition (BBPC; run in conjunction with Project COBB Photography) has been showcasing the work of both experienced and novice photographers from the baseball community over the past two years.  The 2012 season sees the third running of the competition, and although it is still early days, it looks like it will be a challenge to top the total of 145 photos submitted in last year’s competition.

But the slow start is quite probably in large part due to the unpleasant weather we’ve endured (and the resulting lack of fixtures) during the opening weeks of the season. Cold, wet conditions do not make sports photographers eager to get their equipment out.

The good news is that with the glorious weather we are now enjoying, there should be games galore and no excuse to leave the camera at home. In addition, the submission process is now slicker than ever as the clever folks at BaseballSoftballUK have built a special online entry form.

The online entry form can be accessed by clicking HERE.

Vote now in the British Baseball Photography Competition

bbpcThe National Baseball Championships have been played, the nights are drawing in and most players have swapped their cleats and pants for an armchair. But at least one more contest remains to be decided: the 2011 British Baseball Photography Competition.

A panel of judges convened in September to whittle the 145 entries down to 10 finalists. Now it’s time for the judging panel to turn over the shortlisted entries to the British baseball community, so that members can cast their vote on which image they think is the pick of the bunch.

During the rest of October, you will be able to have your say on which photo you think deserves to win via an online ballot. To cast your vote, browse through the 10 shortlisted entries in the specially created gallery, and then once you have decided on your choice, open up the voting window by clicking on the link in the gallery footer.

The ballot will close at 11.59 pm on 31 October, and each individual is limited to one vote.

Two weeks left to submit your photos for the 2011 British Baseball Photography Competition

bbpcThere are 2 weeks left until the 12 September deadline for submitting photos to the 2011 British Baseball Photography Competition (BBPC), which is the day after the senior National Baseball Championship finals in Hemel.

Entrants are invited to submit up to 24 photos during the contest, an increase of four on last year. A more significant change to the format is that the judging panel will determine only a shortlist, rather than adjudicating on the overall winner. The winning photo for 2011 will, instead, be determined by an online vote among members of the British baseball community. The winner’s prize will once again be a £100 gift card for a photography shop, donated by BaseballSoftballUK.

Some of this year’s entrants have also had their photos featured in BSUK’s fortnightly British baseball and softball e-newsletter Hot Corner, which you can sign up to receive via this link if you are not already getting it.

So far, 10 photographers have submitted a combined total of 84 images. Last year, at the close of the competition, there had been 129 photos submitted by 22 individuals.

For a reminder of how to submit your shots, visit the BBPC 2011 area on the Project COBB website. Be sure to read the full competition rules first. These are also available through the link earlier in this paragraph.

British Baseball Photography Competition now accepting entries for 2011

bbpcThe annual British Baseball Photography Competition (BBPC) is back up and running for 2011. The competition will be similar to last year’s, which was won by Emma Morgan, although entrants will now be able to submit up to 24 photos during the contest, an increase of four on last year.

Finally, I’d like to wish all of you who choose to enter the 2011 competition “happy shooting”.
