BaseballGB Fantasy League – Week Seventeen

by Matt Smith

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.  All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

SWAT were the victors in the inaugural BGB Fantasy League last year.  Will they retain their title in 2010, or will a new champion emerge?

The past week saw MLB teams wheeling and dealing at the non-waiver tarding deadline, but which teams were the winners and losers in the BaseballGB fantasy league?

Beck ‘Nams (GB) 23 12 25 5 0.269 0.794 3 2 65 2 3.74 1.24 6

We begin with a narrow 6-5 win for Beck ‘Nams over the Angels, as JJ’s men did just enough to get the win. Beck ‘Nams comfortably out homered the Angels 12-2 thanks to Konerko, Pujols, Cruz and Weeks, yet somehow lost runs 24-23. Arroyo and Davis were the pick of the pitchers. For the Angels Gordon Beckham has found his hitting stroke, while Nolasco and Halladay led the pitching staff. Jon Rauch losing his closing job is a blow for the Angels, with Qualls in as a set-up guy in Tampa.

Iron Men 34 10 42 8 0.286 0.844 5 2 68 0 3.19 1.16 6

Bonestalkers provided an upset, holding Iron Men 6-6. The pitching of Danks, Beckett and two saves each from Rivera and Jenks helped Bonestalkers take four out of six categories. Iron Men had a fantastic week from Liriano and the bats of Uggla and Delmon Young helped them take four offensive categories.

The Cheddar Chasers 26 2 22 1 0.31 0.785 6 2 45 4 3.02 1.04 4
Weston-Super-Sox 41 9 35 4 0.321 0.945 4 4 56 1 4.66 1.4 8

The Sox slugged their way to an 8-4 win over the Chasers, taking all six offensive categories thanks to Carlos Gonzalez (sorry Matt!) and Mauer and Soriano had a four-save week. Matt benefitted from Garza’s no-hitter, but Dotel’s trade to the Dodgers means he needs more saves from elsewhere.

Grip it n Rip It 20 6 24 7 0.28 0.831 1 3 7 2 5.91 2.06 4

The Spaniards picked up an 8-4 win over Rip It, who failed to reach the 20 inning minimum, which cost them two categories. Burnett and new Astro Happ had nice weeks on the mound while Swisher, Cano and Ibanez provided power.

Last year’s champions SWAT dented the Stuff’s title hopes with a 7-4 win. Zimmerman, new Yankee Berkman and Walker got the job done with the bat, while Capps, Soria and Simon combined for six saves. David Wright was the Stuff’s top hitter, while Hanson and Hamels racked up the strikeouts.

Boston Rogue Waves 34 8 26 3 0.262 0.745 2 4 29 2 4.03 1.66 5

My Isotopes picked up a 7-5 win over the Waves thanks to a good week for my pitchers, with Cain, Billingsley and Hudson helping put up a WHIP under 1. Cabrera, Werth and Tulowitzki were my top hitters, but the injury to Prado is a blow, especially if he is not put on the DL. Votto, Huff and Beltran were the Waves’ top hitters, while Chris Perez, who will take over closing with Kerry Wood in New York, had three saves.

We end with another upset as the Bats edged past the Vendors 6-5. Torres and Weaver were the pick of the Bats, while Buchholz, Marcum and Price helped the Vendors take wins, strikeouts and ERA.

Rounding things up

Beck ‘Nams remain top, now five games ahead of Iron Men, with the Chasers 10 back in third. The Sox’s win puts them level with the Stuff, with my Isotopes keeping ahead of the Waves. Rip It are just half a game further back, ahead of the Vendors. SWAT are closing in on the Angels, while the the bottom three of the Spaniards, Bats and Bonestalkers all avoided defeat.

This week’s fixtures are as follows:
Beck ‘Nams v Waves
Iron Men v Angels
Chasers v Bonestalkers
Sox v Stuff
Isotopes v Rip It
Vendors v Spaniards
SWAT v Bats

Remember, if MLB trades have seen your guys lose value, why not take a look at other teams’ rosters to see if you can work out a trade.
