BaseballGB Fantasy League – Week Eighteen

by Mark George

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.  All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

SWAT were the victors in the inaugural BGB Fantasy League last year.  Will they retain their title in 2010, or will a new champion emerge?

There are now just four weeks left in the BaseballGB fantasy league’s regular season. Six teams will be battling it our for the league title and six will be competing in the consolation playoffs. But which teams are heating up at the right time?

We begin with a big win for Matt’s Chasers, who thrashed Bonestalkers 10-1 including a comprehensive 6-0 in offensive categories. Despite hitting just two homers, the Chasers were helped by huge weeks for Chone Figgins and Prince Fielder, while Ubaldo Jiminez and Carl Pavano led the pitching staff. The injury-ravaged Bonestalkers could only win one category thanks to saves from Jenks and Rivera and tied holds.

Beck ‘Nams (GB) 37 7 31 7 0.298 0.822 4 5 46 2 3.65 1.04 9

The Chasers’ win puts a little pressure on the league-leading Beck ‘Nams, who defeated the Waves 9-2. JJ’s pitchers took five out of six categories thanks to Carpenter and Correia, but the real star was Brandon Morrow’s pair of wins and 26 strikeouts. Pujols, Ichiro and Konerko had good weeks with the bat. The Waves were a little hard done by to lose so heavily, as they put up pretty respectable numbers across the board. Hill, Hunter and Votto all had nice weeks, while Lewis, Lester and Niese all pitched well but had no wins to show for their efforts.

Are the Iron Men beginning to crumble? The Angels pulled off an upset with an 8-3 win which included a sweep of offensive categories thanks to Teixeira, Upton and Beckham, while Halladay anchored the pitching staff. Uggla, Andrus and Wainwright were Iron Men’s best players.

The Sox just got the better of the Stuff in a closely-fought matchup, taking five offensive categories thanks to Carlos Gonzalez, Beltre and Mauer. The Stuff had the better pitching, with Johan, Hamels and Latos racking up the strikeouts, and Adam Dunn had a five-homer week. The loss of Carlos Santana to a season-ending injury is a blow.

My Isotopes picked up an 11-1 win over Rip It, who failed to meet the 20 inning minimum requirement, which cost them a win in ERA. McGehee, picked up with Prado on the DL, drove in 11 runs, while Tulowitzki, Werth and Ethier also had good weeks. Tim Hudson picked up a pair of wins to lead the pitching staff, although Niemann’s shoulder injury is a concern.

The Spaniards also failed to meet the 20 inning minimum requirement, but the Vendors would have won the pitching categories 6-0 anyway on their way to an 11-1 win. Bourn, Braun, Lee and Choo helped the Vendors take five offensive categories, while Lilly and Lidge led the pitching staff. The Spaniards put up decent offensive numbers, and were close to winning a few more categories, but could only take homers thanks to Swisher and Ibanez.

Another matchup, and another team which failed to pitch 20 innings, as the Bats fell short in an 11-1 beating by SWAT. Last year’s champions had plenty of power from Zimmerman, LaPorta and Bautista, while Gallardo, Anderson and Cahill helped the pitching staff put up a sub-1.00 WHIP.

Rounding things up

The results mean JJ’s Beck ‘Nams are top, with a nine-game lead over the Chasers, who overtake Iron Men. My Isotopes leapfrog the Sox and Stuff into fourth, with the Vendors closing in on a place in the top six. SWAT’s big win puts them back at .500 and moves them up to eighth, ahead of the Waves and Angels. The bottom four of Rip It, Spaniards, Bats and Bonestalkers all lost 1-11.

The week 19 fixtures are as follows:
Beck ‘Nams v Iron Men
Chasers v Angels
Isotopes v Vendors
Sox v Bats
Stuff v Bonestalkers
SWAT v Spaniards
Waves v Rip It
