MLB this Week: ESPN America double-headers

There are eight MLB games starting before midnight U.K. time this working week.

The week starts with a bonus early game as the White Sox and Royals make up their postponed game from Friday. The Royals have won the first two games of the series and will look for ‘Big Game’ James Shields to complete the sweep in an exciting pitching match-up with Chris Sale.

ESPN America is offering MLB double-headers on both Wednesday and Thursday evening.

The Mariners and Pirates aren’t featured a great deal on the channel so the first game on Wednesday offers the perfect opportunity to watch those teams, especially as it brings together Felix Hernandez and A.J. Burnett in a very promising encounter at the beautiful PNC Park

BBC 5 Live Sports Extra is scheduled to provide coverage of the Yankees-Rockies game from Coors Field on Thursday.

All times are in BST.

MLB this week: 15 early games

There are fifteen MLB games starting before midnight U.K. time this working week.

The first two games of the A’s-Red Sox series from Boston only narrowly fall in the ‘early’ bracket by five minutes, as does a game from Fenway on Thursday.

However, the rest of the games are all at a convenient time for viewing.

The game between Miami and Minnesota on Tuesday was originally scheduled to feature exciting young pitcher Jose Fernandez, but the Marlins and Twins’ game on Monday has been postponed so now they will play a double-header on Tuesday and we’ll have to wait to see who pitches in which of the two games.

There’s a good selection of games scheduled for Wednesday, including a Stephen Strasburg start in Washington, before four early contests on Thursday including a Dodgers-Mets clash on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra.

MLB early games this week: 7 Up

We’ve been spoiled a bit for ‘early’ games during the first two weeks of the MLB season.

This week is a more typical batch of seven games starting before midnight U.K. time.

We start with a Patriots’ Day game at Fenway as the Red Sox host the Rays in a game that may actually prove a little too early for some travelling home from work that evening.

Wednesday’s pairing offers us an Interleague match-up between the Royals and Braves followed by a contest that prior to 2013 would have also been an NL-AL fixture between the Astros and A’s.

Both BBC Radio and ESPN America are focusing on the Giants-Brewers game from Miller Park on Thursday evening. We were originally on course to get another look at Matt Harvey in the Mets’ game against the Rockies, but the postponement of New York’s game in Minnesota on Sunday means that Harvey is likely to be pushed back a day (i.e. keeping everyone else on their normal turn in the starting rotation).

Whilst that’s a shame for U.K. based Mets fans hoping to watch Harvey’s start on Thursday evening, the payback is that he will match up with Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals on Friday night. That game starts at ten past midnight and it should be well worth staying up for.

All times are in BST.

Tuesday 16 April

Wednesday 17 April

19.20. Texas at Chicago Cubs (Ogando – Samardzija)
20.10. NY Mets at Colorado (Niese – Chacin)
20.40. Detroit at Seattle (Scherzer – Iwakuma)

There are live MLB games to watch every evening this working week.

ESPN America has a game every evening, including two from the Toronto-Detroit series and a Friday game from Wrigley Field.

BBC 5 Live Sports Extra will feature Detroit for the second Thursday in a row and if the starting pitcher schedules hold true it should be a good match-up on the mound between Josh Johnson and Doug Fister.

All times are in BST.

MLB this weekend: Great pitching match-ups

The first few days of the 2013 MLB season certainly haven’t disappointed and there are a great selection of games taking place this weekend during the British evening.

Saturday’s games include John Lackey’s first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the whole of the 2012 season. A Felix Hernandez start is always worth watching and he takes on the White Sox today, whilst the Washington Nationals are looking to bounce back from a 15-0 thumping by the Reds on Friday night.

There are some tremendous pitching match-ups on Sunday, most notably in Detroit, Toronto, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Arlington (Texas).

ESPN America is concentrating on the NCAA Basketball Final Fours on Saturday evening, but they will be showing the Yankees-Tigers game on Sunday evening and then the ESPN Sunday Night game between the Angels and Rangers. The latter will be Yu Darvish’s follow-up to his oh-so-near-perfect performance against the Houston Astros.

All times are in BST.

MLB Opening Week

It would be enough simply to have MLB back, but to start out with 27 early games – those that take place during the evening, U.K. time – in total this working week makes it even better.

Twenty-six of the thirty MLB teams are playing at least one day-game this working week, with only fans of Arizona, Atlanta, Cleveland and Toronto needing to stay up late to watch their team during their opening few games.

BBC 5 Live Sports Extra is broadcasting two live games this week on digital radio, starting on Monday with Yankees v Red Sox and following that up with Detroit v Minnesota on Thursday.

With plenty of live games on ESPN America and all of the action available online via an MLB.TV subscription, we can all dive headfirst into the 2013 MLB season.

MLB ‘early’ games 2012: Part Two

In the first part of our review of the pre-midnight U.K. time, working week MLB games played during 2012 we focused on the weekday and monthly distribution of those games.

In this second and final part, we will focus on how the early games are divided up among the 30 MLB teams.

The data reveals how often a team played at a convenient time for fans in the U.K. to follow the action live. This may be an important factor to consider if you are new to the sport and are having difficulty in picking a team to follow.

Chicago Cubs lead the way again

It’s no surprise that the Chicago Cubs once again top the ‘early’ game charts by a considerable margin, with their total of 39 ‘early’ games being 13 more than the next highest total (the Milwaukee Brewers’ 26).

The team stuck by tradition for many years and didn’t install floodlights at Wrigley Field until August 1988. Since that point, largely due to the location of the ballpark and the surrounding area, the Cubs have been restricted by the city council in respect of the amount of home night-games they are allowed to play.

Consequently the Cubs will always be involved in the highest number of games played during the British evening and teams that play the Cubs the most (i.e. fellow NL Central division teams) can expect a small boost as well with an extra day-game or two per season.

The full list

Setting the Cubs’ total to one side, the number of ‘early’ games played range from the Brewers’ 26 down to just 12 for both the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles (two of the lowest scorers in 2011 as well).

Teams 2012 gms 2012 rank 2011 gms 2011 rank Gm difference

Baltimore Orioles 12 J-29th 15 J-27th -3

The top five teams for playing ‘early’ games in 2011 – the Cubs, Rays, Tigers, A’s and Padres – all featured in the top seven in 2012. The World Series champion San Francisco Giants moved up to the third-most ‘early’ games played in 2012 compared to being joint-sixth in 2011, whilst the Brewers’ six-game increase from their 2011 total (from 20 to 26) moved them up in the rankings from joint-sixteenth to second.

The most striking trend when comparing 2011 with 2012 is how all of the AL East teams saw a decline in the number of ‘early’ games being played; the Ray’s decline from 32 to 22 being the most extreme. This will predominantly be accounted for by the fact that a team’s schedule is weighted so that they play more games against other teams in the same division. Therefore if a couple of teams in a division decide to host less day-games in a particular season, that will affect not only their own score, but also that of teams they play against most frequently (exactly how that plays out – i.e. which specific games are played at night rather than in the day time – would need to be considered on a team-by-team basis).

Looking ahead to 2013

It stands to reason that every team’s day-game total is not only affected by their own home-game schedule but also the schedules of their opponents. When looking ahead to 2013, we have to remember that the Houston Astros’ move from the NL Central to the AL West division has resulted in interleague games being played virtually all season long and the whole scheduling format being modified.  It will be interesting to see how this effects the number of day-games different teams play over the next few seasons compared with 2011 and 2012.

MLB ‘early’ games 2012: Part One

For several years now, BaseballGB has provided a guide to the MLB games that British fans can enjoy during the evening, U.K. time.

Last year I compiled all the data to produce a guide to the 2011 ‘early’ games and this is the first of two columns in which I do the same for the 2012 season.

As before, I’ve focused on games scheduled for the working week (Monday to Friday inclusive). For many of us it’s easier to catch a late-night game on Saturday than a mid-week game and the vast majority of Sunday games are played during the British evening anyway. That means the working week ‘early’ games produce ‘bonus’ baseball that we can watch without staying up all hours.

The figures only include games that were due to be played before midnight U.K. time when I checked the fixture list at the start of the respective week. Games rearranged at short notice during the week haven’t been included for two reasons: 1) I can’t be sure I always added them to the list and I wanted the data to be consistent, 2) a late rearranged fixture isn’t so useful because by their nature they don’t help you plan for the week’s viewing/listening.

TFI Wednesday?

When it comes to planning your week, Wednesday and Thursday are the best two evenings to keep clear for live baseball.  BBC 5 Live Sports Extra switched from a Sunday night slot to a Thursday evening show (with some Sunday games thrown in for good measure) in 2012 and there were plenty of games for the team to pick from.

The comparison chart shows that 2012 followed the same pattern as 2011 when it came to which weekdays offered the best chance to catch some live baseball at a convenient time.  The Monday total is boosted by two U.S. public holidays each year, on which a significant proportion of games are played during the day-time, whilst Wrigley Field is often the venue for a Friday early fixture. Of the 24 played in 2012, 13 included the Chicago Cubs.

The best baseball months

Looking at the early games from a monthly basis we see that the season starts off brilliantly, then drops in June before picking up again during August and September. ‘October baseball’ is often used as a shorthand for a team playing the postseason, but in 2012 the regular season spillled over into the first three days of that month and the final day of the season (3 October) produced 6 early games.

When we put the monthly distribution of 2012 games alongside that of 2011 we see that there are a few notable differences*.

The drop in games in June 2012 looks particularly striking and there are no obvious reasons, looking at the schedules, to account for it.  Seeing a dip in June is perhaps preferable to one in August, with games starting to count for that little bit more during the second half of the season, and we did get an appreciable rise in August early games in 2012 compared to 2011 (up from 38 to 49). That was counterbalanced by a decrease during September.

(*) For the sake of tidiness, I’ve excluded the day of games played on 31 March in 2011 and the 6 early games played in October 2012.

Next time

In Part Two, we’ll take a look at how the early games were distributed among the MLB teams.

2013: Things to look forward to

It’s New Year’s Day and even if you’re not the sort to be conjuring up New Year’s resolutions, the changing of the calendar does offer the opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and to look ahead to what may be in store in the year ahead.

Naturally, quite a lot of my thoughts revolve around baseball. Here are some of the things I’m looking forward to in 2013.

World Baseball Classic

The WBC returns for the third staging of the marquee international competition this March. It’s a shame that Great Britain couldn’t make it through the qualifying stage, but Spain did come through their qualifier to add a third European team to the traditional pair of the Netherlands and Italy. The Dutch were a revelation in 2009 and have won the Baseball World Cup since then, so they could spring a few more surprises this time around.

Regardless of the fortunes of our European representatives, it promises to be another colourful and entertaining tournament.

A Spring Training surprise

The excitement of the WBC will have the unfortunate side effect of showing up how tame the pre-season Spring Training games are. The joy of having baseball, any baseball, back soon gives way to the feeling that Spring Training goes on a good 10 to 14 days too long for us fans eager to watch competitive games once more.

In spite of this, there is always a player or two that catches the eye, sometimes a highly-touted prospect getting some at-bats or innings before starting the year in the Minors or occasionally a youngster hoping to win a Major League roster spot. Last year, I watched part of an Atlanta Braves game and witnessed the dazzling defensive skills of Andrelton Simmons. He had to wait until 2 June to make his Big League debut and it was all the more enjoyable to watch him impressing having seen him back in Spring Training.

An encore from my Oakland A’s

I entered the 2012 season carrying very modest expectations for the A’s and they were exceeded in spectacular style with an unexpected AL West division title.  The amount of young talent on the roster gives cause for optimism that 2012 can be built upon, although there’s no doubt that the level of competition in the American League will make it a real challenge to return to the playoffs in 2013.

Still, part of what made the A’s season so memorable was that they were a team full of character and full of characters. Even if they don’t quite live up to their 2012 campaign this season, they should be a fun team to follow day in, day out.

Is winning the Blue Jays’ way?

As well as the A’s surprising playoff place, the 2012 postseason included the Baltimore Orioles (previous appearance 1997) and the Washington Nationals (their first appearance since moving to the U.S. capital in 2005).

Toronto haven’t played in the postseason since 1993; however they have had the most impressive offseason of any team so far and – even with the Miami Marlins being a recent warning from history on putting too much emphasis on ‘winning the offseason’ – whether they can break through in the AL East will be one of the long-running stories of the season.

Dodgers delight?

The Blue Jays have added the most Major League talent this offseason, but no team has undergone a more dramatic transformation than the Los Angeles Dodgers over the past year.  They’ve moved from bankruptcy proceedings to the largest payroll in the Majors. Whether manager Don Mattingly thinks it’s fair or not, the Dodgers’ spending has put the team firmly under the media microscope and there will be no middle ground in assessing their 2013 season. Like the New York Yankees before them, it’s either success through winning the World Series or failure through any other outcome.

Year two from the baseball’s new dynamic duo

Little captivates sports fans more than seeing young players bursting onto the scene.  Mike Trout and Bryce Harper more than lived up to the hype in 2012 by producing incredibly impressive seasons and much is expected of them in 2013.  They have quickly become stars in the game and, regardless of the team you support, it will be a lot of fun seeing how they get on.

Good times ahead for Great Britain?

2012 was an exciting year in prospect for the Great Britain Senior National Team and unfortunately it didn’t go as well as we all had hoped.

Missing out in the World Baseball Classic qualifier to Canada, and being soundly beaten by the Germans along the way, was a shame, but the real disappointment came in an underwhelming European Championship showing that demoted Team GB to the B-Level qualifiers for the 2014 event.

2013 is a new year and the creation of a new GB Lions Development Team, combined with the appearances of Ben Pearson (Cartmel Valley Lions), Gary Davison (Southampton Mustangs) and Michael Trask in the Senior National Team last year, bodes well for the future. Team GB are provisionally scheduled to travel to Zurich, Switzerland, in July to compete against the hosts, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Slovenia and Ukraine to gain entry to the 2014 Euros.

Further progress in British baseball

After another enjoyable year of domestic action in 2012, hopes are high that 2013 will be a year of progress with plenty of competition throughout the leagues in the adult competition, youth set-ups going from strength to strength and improvements to facilities.

The baseball and softball facilities at Farnham Park are coming along well and, subject to the grass bedding in, hopefully will be hosting games during 2013. Having good quality facilities that can act as a national centre should be another important step forward, coupled with plans to build a new site in the north a few years down the line too.

BBC MLB coverage

BBC Radio continued to support baseball in 2012 with Nat Coombs, Josh Chetwynd and the rest of the team doing a superb job throughout the season. The baseball community banter that was a hallmark of ‘Baseball on 5’ really came to the fore in the team’s best year yet.

Fingers crossed that the coverage will continue again in 2013 and perhaps we’ll even see a free-to-air TV return for MLB after NFL fans were treated to some TV games on the BBC red button in 2012.

BaseballGB

The highlight of my writing year in 2012 was contributing two chapters to the Nine Aces and a Joker book (an excellent way to spend a few pounds of Xmas money if you’ve not already bought your copy, I may add!).

As for this website, 2012 saw the introduction of a new site design that seems to have worked well in combining the shorter blog posts with longer articles. I moved away slightly from regular columns to ‘writing on a whim’ which worked to an extent but also showed me that I quite enjoy having a structure and schedule to work around. So, my ‘Weekly’ Hit Ground Ball MLB column will return in 2013 alongside a modified British Baseball Beat column and a few other new features as well.

I can’t wait to get started.
