England v Wales in a Welsh Baseball International on Saturday

WelshBBThe annual international Welsh Baseball game between England and Wales takes place this Saturday at Tredegar Park, Newport, Wales. ‘Kick off’ is scheduled for 2 p.m and a poster for the event can be found here.

Welsh baseball, also sometimes known as British baseball, is a hybrid of baseball, cricket and rounders and has been featured on BaseballGB previously.

The annual international game was first held in 1908 and it would be fair to say that the Welsh have dominated the tie in recent years.  England haven’t prevailed since 1987, with a rain-induced draw in 1998 being the only time since then that they have managed to avoid defeat.

Does that sequence mean England have no chance again this year, or do the laws of probability tell us the Welsh winning streak has to come to an end soon?

Why not head along to Newport this Saturday and find out, while taking in a truly unique sporting event that is steeped in history.  For more details about Welsh Baseball, just visit the official website.

Another bat-and-ball international in Cardiff

Wales is a proud sporting nation and the superb job Cardiff made of hosting the first test of the 2009 Ashes Series last week was yet another example of this.  However, the England-Australia encounter isn’t the only international bat-and-ball game to take place in the city this month.

A ‘B’ British/Welsh Baseball International doesn’t quite have the wide media appeal of an Ashes test, but anyone in the vicinity of Trelai Park in Cardiff on Saturday 25 July shouldn’t miss the chance to watch a sporting battle between England and Wales, played out in this entertaining variation of baseball.  The ‘A’ International is set to take place in Liverpool this Saturday.

Further details can be found on the WelshBaseball.co.uk website, including a link to a feature about leading Welsh baseball ‘bowler’ Matthew Hopkins.

Welsh baseball receives a sponsorship boost

BaseballGB is always keen to support the wider baseball community within Britain.  We were therefore delighted to hear that Welsh baseball is bucking the harsh economic trend by securing sponsorship for the 2009 season from a group of businesses.

Spotlight on Welsh/British Baseball

WelshBBOne of the main aims of BaseballGB is to provide coverage of all types of baseball that might interest a British fan.  Comments on MLB trades sit side-by-side with news from the Great Britain national team and reports from the National Baseball League to create a unique mix of content.

However, there is a form of the game that we haven’t covered as yet: Welsh/British baseball.  Separate from the baseball played elsewhere on the British Isles, this is a sport that has a distinct identity and a rich heritage.  Andrew Weltch is making sure that it continues to be recognised thanks to the excellent Welsh Baseball website and he recently spent some time talking to BaseballGB about the sport.  Continue reading
