Off and running

Baseball is back, with so many games going on at once it’s hard to keep up!

Tom Glavine pitched brilliantly last night to take the first Major League win of 2007 against the Cards. Great to see the video montage of the last ten years of baseball on Five as well before the game. Particularly brought back memories of the Moose man Todd Macklin; I learned a lot about the game from his analysis in my formative baseball years and I remember being genuinely sad to see him head back home. Hope things are going well for him. JC’s certainly a worthy replacement though.

You probably would have got short odds on Dontrelle Willis being the first pitcher to get a win on day two of the season. It’s going to be a long, long year in Washington.

So far I’ve watched bits of four games: the Blue Jays and the Tigers (neither Halladay nor Bonderman quite looked on top of their game, which is to be expected I guess), the Indians and the White Sox (the Tribe took to Contreras like it was batting practice – White Sox fans will be hoping it was a blip rather than a continuation of his second half struggles from last year), the D-Rays and the Yankees (this will likely sum up Tampa’s season: some exciting young talent but not quite enough to get the job done – this year at least), and the Phillies-Braves game that has just finished (two bombs for Renteria and Brian McCann carried on hitting as if he’s never been away).

I think I’ll go for the less obvious choice now and watch Brandon Webb face the Rockies rather than the Red Sox against the Royals. What a luxury of choices us lucky MLB.TV viewers have!

Apparently it was a big night on Coronation Street tonight. Why don’t I feel that I’ve missed out?!

Displaced Brit in Canada here.:) Sadly I can’t afford MLB.TV right now and won’t be able to for at least another month (and even that is looking tenuous unfortunately).

Got a game on TV tonight though. Los Angeles vs… I forget now:) 8pm my time.

Last nights Mets/Cards games was awesome. That throw to home was stunning.

Not that you lucky people with MLB.TV have a reason to check it out, but the Gameday feature that MLB provide has improved significantly. Instead of just showing pitch position on the plate, they now show the path the ball took, how far it curved etc… VERY cool.

Jays game is or was on TV here. I LOATHE the Jays, because the networks here assume we’re fans of the Jays rather than baseball itself. We get 250 games on TV here I heard. Of those, HALF are Jays games.

    Depressing:(

Hi Drood. I was going to put a post up about Gameday the other day as they launched the new version at the end of Spring Training. Certainly looks very impressive. It’s even great to look back at after a game has finished as you can really get a sense of the battle between the pitcher and the hitter.

I know it’s not quite the same, but Gameday Audio is a decent substitute to MLB.TV, and I often find myself tuning in for the radio commentary late at night.

Commisserations on the Blue Jays’ opening day victory! I find some of the local networks are extremely biased towards the home team, so I can well understand how it may get on your nerves!

Oh, and as I’ve typed this my MLB.TV has just stopped. Maybe I’m not so lucky after all!

I did have Gameday Audio a couple of years back, but the quality isn’t fantastic. My biggest gripe, though, was that it was significantly behind Gameday. If they synced the commentary with the Gameday visuals, that’d be fantastic and would probably do me just fine for a while. Ah well.

Jays won? Bummer. Though I don’t especially wish them any ill, I just wish they didn’t assume “You’re in Canada, you must love the Jays”. I mean it was like that even BEFORE the Expos left! Their final season, we got NO Expo’s games at all on any channel I had. Though someone did broadcast the final home game.

Of course our baseball coverage will drop like a stone once the damn NBA reaches their climax. *sigh* Just wish MLB.TV was cheaper. UK money, yes, it’s a bargain. Canadian money… Not so much.
